Comptroller Combs Will Not Seek Re-Election

The Republican chairman of the Texas House Ways and Means Committee says he is considering a bid to replace Susan Combs as state comptroller.

Kerrville Rep. Harvey Hilderbran issued a statement Wednesday thanking Combs for her service and said he is planning to run for statewide office, possibly for comptroller.

Hilderbran said he would make a formal announcement soon, but was concentrating on the current special legislative session on redistricting.

As the chairman of Ways and Means, Hilderbran was one of the top state tax policy writers. He worked closely with Combs, who as comptroller was responsible for tax collection and disbursing funds to state agencies.

He has long been considered a possible candidate to replace Combs.
