Abbott Signs Pre-K Boost, But Work Remains for Republicans

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has signed into law a pre-K boost that was among his top campaign promises but has underwhelmed educators.

Abbott made the pre-K bill his first flagship education initiative. It gives more money to schools that agree to implement higher standards.

Abbott on Thursday also expressed confidence that lawmakers would work out a last-minute standoff over new Texas gun rights before his first legislative session ends next week.

Powerful law enforcement groups want the governor to veto legislation allowing people to openly carry handguns if police can't ask gun owners for their license. Abbott hasn't taken a stand on that provision.

Other major conservative issues, including tax cuts and a sharp increase in border security spending, are already settled ahead of the Legislature adjourning Tuesday.
