Irving Voting Case Plaintiff Seeks Almost $600,000

Attorneys are asking a judge to order Irving to award them almost $600,000 in fees and costs for their successful challenge of the city's voting system.

The attorneys for Manuel Benavidez successfully sued the city of Irving to change how its voters elect city officials. They had alleged the city's at-large voting system diluted Latino residents' voting power.

Attorneys representing Manuel Benavidez asked the court Thursday for more than $598,600 in fees and expenses from Irving.

Earlier this month, a federal judge in Dallas ordered Irving officials to adopt a single-member district election plan and awarded costs to Benavidez.

Both sides must submit a joint proposal for a new election system or separate ones if they can't agree.

Irving officials say they'll appeal but will work with the plaintiff on a new plan.
