Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery Acquires History-Making Beyoncé Photograph

The National Portrait Gallery has not yet announced when the portrait will go on display

The Smithsonian is adding U.S. royalty to its permanent collection.

A historic Vogue portrait of Beyoncé will hang at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Last year, photographer Tyler Mitchell became the first African American photographer to shoot a cover for the fashion publication in its 125-year history.

The portrait titled "See Your Halo" was the cover of the magazine's iconic September issue.

Mitchell was just 23 years old when he photographed the superstar.

"A year ago today we broke the flood gates open. Since then it was important to spend the whole year running through them making sure every piece of the gate was knocked down. And now I’m glad to share this picture is being acquired into the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection," Mitchell said on Instagram.

The National Portrait Gallery has not yet announced when the portrait will go on display.
