Second Marine Killed in Hawaii Osprey Crash Identified

Twenty-two people were aboard the Camp Pendleton-based MV-22 Osprey

The second Marine who died following Sunday's crash of an MV-22B Osprey on Oahu, Hawaii, has been identified as Lance Cpl. Matthew J. Determan, Military officials announced Wednesday.

The 21-year-old died Tuesday of injuries sustained when the hybrid military aircraft he was aboard made a "hard landing" during routine training at Bellows Air Force Base.

Determan was a rifleman from Ahwatukee, Arizona, who was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California before he was deployed with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

“Lance Cpl. Determan represents the best America has to offer,” said Col Vance L. Cryer, commanding officer, 15th MEU. “Our country and our Corps are poorer for his loss, but his example will continue to inspire us."

Before his death, Determan earned the National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Lance Corporal Joshua E. Barron, 24, of Spokane, Washington, was the first fatality in the crash.

Two Marines remain hospitalized, but are in stable condition, according to a military news release.

The crew had deployed from San Diego with USS Essex just last week. The 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit is based at Camp Pendleton in California and is in Hawaii for about a week for training.

The Osprey is a tilt-rotor aircraft can take off and land like a helicopter but flies like an airplane.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
