Firefighters in South Jersey Under Fire for Lewd Sign

Officials in a South Jersey town plan to discipline some volunteer firefighters over a banner asking people to show their breasts.

The lewd sign was displayed below the Williamstown Fire Company's banner at the state's Fireman's Convention in Wildwood over the weekend. A photo of it ended up on social media.

"I thought it was completely inappropriate and distasteful and I was shocked," said Rebecca Budney, a Williamstown resident.

[[275482561, C]] Monroe Township Mayor Michael Gabbianelli told the South Jersey Times the sign did not represent the Gloucester County town the right way. The mayor said it was probably a joke that got carried away. He later spoke with NBC10 and claimed both he and the Fire Department Board of Trustees were furious.

"PO'd is I guess the right way to say it," Gabbianelli said. "It's embarrassing to everybody."

He's not sure who put the sign up, but those responsible will likely be suspended.

"I think an action like that is appropriate as long as they'll still have firefighters on duty who could save us," Budney said.

The fire company posted an apology on its website.
