Who Has the Most Jewish Cred? Ask the Comics

Late night hosts joked about the spectacle of "incredibly religious Christian presidential candidates fighting over who loves Jews more"

As GOP candidates turned up the schmaltz to court Jewish voters Thursday, late night's comics turned up the heat.

Or, as Jon Stewart explained the meaning of the Republican Jewish Coalition Forum: "For this holiday, Jews commemorate the miracle of incredibly religious Christian presidential candidates fighting over who loves Jews more."

That fight, Stewart said on "The Daily Show," was won by either Newt Gingrich, who earned the heartiest applause, or Michele Bachmann, who boasted of having worked on a kibbutz right after college.

"Holy shiksa, we have a winner!" Stewart shouted. "Michele Bachmann loved Israel so much, she was willing to join a socialist collective. Wow!"

As for Gingrich, Jay Leno joked about what he thought a more likely avenue for the current front-runner.

"Newt Gingrich promised to support Israel and not give in to the Palestinians — and promised his next wife would be Jewish," Jay Leno joked.
