Pregnant on Opiates: Doc's Orders Can Be Illegal

Pregnant opiate users and addicts are sometimes told by health professionals to go on a maintenance program like Subutex or Suboxone rather than going cold turkey, which could result in a miscarriage. However, law enforcement and child welfare agents may say the use of any drug, including those taken to reduce the symptoms of opiate dependence, should be investigated. This Catch-22 situation forces some women to choose between risking a miscarriage or having the child potentially taken away at birth.
