According to Shuter, TV insiders believe tapping Ellen DeGeneres’ wife for the gig would bring a wave of publicity to offset the star power of Jennifer Lopez on “American Idol” when the shows go head-to-head.
“Idol” host Ryan Seacrest told de Rossi on his morning radio show Wednesday that he’d also heard producers wanted her for the gig, but figured she wouldn’t go for it.
"I'm not going to pass! Let me think about it," de Rossi said, according to People. "I used to be a ballet dancer. It's not completely a pass. You never know."
Whether De Rossi is offered a slot or not, one person who’s already sold on the concept of a same-sex pairing is “Dancing” judge Carrie Ann Inaba.
"I would love it," Inaba told People. "I fully support that and I think America is ready for that. Our country is much more accepting of same sex couples and it would be great for the show to reflect that."
Veteran “Dancing” pro Derek Hough told EW.com he isn’t so sure the show’s producers would ever sign on to such a move. But he said he couldn't rule it out.
“If I’ve learned one thing on this show ... it’s to never say never,” he said.
Could it really be such a stretch for a show that boasts on its website that its basic formula includes "tons of glitter and spray tans?"
