Manatee County Woman Shot, Killed by Neighbor While Looking for Lost Dog

A Florida woman was shot and killed Tuesday night while searching for her lost dog in a Manatee County neighborhood.

According to NBC affiliate WFLA-TV, Rebecca Rawson was with her daughter and brother-in-law near her home in Parrish – located northeast of Bradenton – searching for the animal when one of them knocked on the door of 83-year-old Eugene Matthews.

Manatee County Sheriff’s deputies said Matthews opened his door and started shooting at the group and into a vehicle where Rawson, 64, was sitting. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where Rawson died.

Matthews was charged with second degree murder. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Neighbors told WFLA that Matthews was often armed and wanted to protect the potato farm across from his home.
