‘I Cried': Family Hit by Shutdown Wins $100K Lottery Prize in Virginia

Her name was picked from 554,000 entries to the "Ford Expedition Plus $100K" promotion

A woman who walked away with a $100,000 prize from the Virginia Lottery Friday says the check came at the perfect time because her husband is a furloughed federal worker.

"I cried. I couldn't believe it," said Carrie Walls, from Ashburn.

Walls, an Air Force veteran who served for 13 years, also won a Ford Expedition.

She told the Virginia lottery that the prize is well-timed because her husband currently isn't working.

Her name was picked from 554,000 entries to the "Ford Expedition Plus $100K" promotion on Dec. 4, just over two weeks before the federal government shutdown. She picked up her giant check and new white SUV at Koons Sterling Ford on Friday.

Next, she plans to take her family to Disney World.
