Gluten and Hypoallergenic Pets: 5 Allergy Myths Busted

Gluten "allergies" and hypoallergenic dog breeds are two of the myths that allergists want busted, according to a presentation being given at the annual meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology on Thursday. “There’s this claim about ‘gluten allergy,’ which really doesn’t exist,” presentation organizer Dr. David Stukus told NBC News. "Wheat is a recognized allergy — but a lot of people will misinterpret that as gluten,” Stukus added. Three disorders attributed to gluten on a scientific basis are celiac disease, wheat allergies and non-celiac gluten sensitivity, Stukus said. And as for hypoallergenic pets? No such thing, according to Stukus, because "every single pet will secrete allergens.” He explained that the allergy to pets doesn’t come from the fur – it comes from the animal’s saliva, sweat glands and urine. He added that the best way to choose a pet is to spend time with it and see how your body reacts, to literally "rub your face on the animal."
