Swarms of Music Fans Close World Famous Sunset Strip, Cause Concert Cancellations

The show was initially relocated after fans crowded around the original venue and blocked the street.

Rapper Future's two attempts at throwing a free concert on the Sunset Strip Thursday were both canceled after impossibly large crowds turned out to both locations, prompting two separate shutdowns of stretches of the world famous boulevard.

Hours after an initial plan to welcome 500 fans at the Roxy went awry because of large crowds, rapper Future tweeted about the rescheduled "Salute the Fans" show scheduled for 10 p.m. at the House of Blues, also on the Sunset Strip, with a guarantee that the first 800 people in line would be admitted.

Just before 11 p.m., that show was also canceled and Sunset Boulevard was closed down between La Cienega Boulevard and Kings Road as sheriff's deputies worked to disperse the crowd. Sunset Boulevard was later reopened at about 11:30 p.m.

The original show, scheduled for 7 p.m. at The Roxy Theatre, was canceled after as many as 700 fans crowded around the 300-seat venue, overflowing into lanes of traffic and causing authorities to shut down Sunset Boulevard between Doheny Drive and Crescent Heights Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department.

Aerial video showed a large group of people standing outside the venue in several lanes as patrol cars lined the street.

Authorities said they noticed a crowd of several hundred people at 11 a.m. -- less than two hours after Future sent a tweet that said "The Roxy."

A tweet from The Roxy's Twitter account posted just before 4 p.m. said the rapper's show had been canceled, and Sunset Boulevard was reopened just after 5 p.m.

The cancellation did not impact a separate Thursday evening concert featuring The Ataris, according to the group's Facebook page.
