Suspect in Shooting of New Orleans Medical Student in Custody

The man suspected of dragging a woman down a New Orleans street — and then shooting a medical student who tried to intervene — was arrested Monday, authorities said.

Euric Cain, 21, was arrested by New Orleans police and U.S. marshals, Police Chief Michael Harrison said Monday. Police said Cain was allegedly seen in a surveillance video assaulting an unidentified woman and then shooting Tulane University fourth-year resident Peter Gold, 25.

Gold had stopped his car in an apparent attempt to help the woman.

The video shows Cain shooting Gold in the stomach before attempting to shoot him at least two more times, but his gun jammed.

Cain faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping and armed robbery, according to New Orleans Police Chief Michael Harrison.
