Ten people were taken to the hospital after an NJ Transit bus collided with a taxi in Newark Wednesday and slammed through the front of a building in Newark Wednesday, causing serious structural damage , officials say.
The bus was on its way to Newark Penn Station when it hit the taxi at Washington and Market streets around 12:40 a.m., according to an NJ Transit official. The impact propelled the bus into the building.
The bus driver suffered a minor concussion and facial lacerations, according to an NJ Transit spokesman. He was taken to the hospital, along with the taxi driver and eight bus passengers, where he was treated and released within a few hours. All of the victims are expected to survive.
At least one of the building's load-bearing walls was seriously damaged in the crash, officials say. The bus remained lodged in the front of the building all day Thursday as engineers tried to determine whether moving the bus will cause a collapse.
"It appears to be holding up part of the building, so we've got to go about it very gingerly," said John Davis of the Control Environmental Group.
Crews are putting up scaffolding around the rebuilding so falling debris doesn't his pedestrians.
