Officer Donahue, Injured in Boston Marathon Bombings, Back on the Job

Richard Donohue Jr. almost died after he was shot during shootout with Marathon bombers

The transit police officer who almost died after shot during the gunfight with the Boston Marathon bombers has now returned to work — with a promotion.

Richard Donohue Jr. returned to work Friday after more than two years of recovery and was one of four Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's officers promoted to sergeant.

Heather Abbott, who lost her left leg in the Boston Marathon bombings, and MBTA Police Officer Dic Donohue, shot during the manhunt for the bombers, were on hand to pay it forward after their lives were saved.

The bullet that struck Donohue severed a major artery and he lost most of his blood. He also suffered nerve damage.

MBTA Lt. Richard Sullivan says Donohue was ranked first on the promotion list after taking the exam.

John Moynihan, a six-year veteran of the Boston Police Department, was critically injured in a shootout that left suspect Angelo West dead in Roxbury Friday.
