“I Did Kill Those Cops,” Suspect Says of California Deputy Slayings

A man charged with killing two Northern California sheriff's deputies stunned a courtroom by blurting out that he committed the crimes and is ready to be executed.

"I did kill those cops," an agitated Luis Enrique Monroy Bracamontes said at the end of a hearing Wednesday in Sacramento County Superior Court. While he was being led away in chains, Bracamontes added that he should be executed.

Earlier, during a break, Bracamontes repeatedly told his lawyers he wanted to plead guilty. They said he could not and later blamed his outbursts on anxiety.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for the Utah man. He is charged with killing two deputies in an October rampage that also wounded a motorist and another deputy.

His wife, Janelle Marquez Monroy, also is charged.
