The excitement and buildup for the first Sunday of the NFL season quickly fizzled for some die-hard football fans.

ESPN's Fantasy Football app crashed Sunday just as the early afternoon games kicked off, leaving millions of user in the dark on how their teams were stacking up against the competition.

The sports network acknowledged the outage in a tweet and apologized, saying it is working to provide a fix.

Agitated fans took to Twitter to voice their frustration, posting a string of hilarious "melt down" gifs as trouble persisted during the first slate of games.

Fantasy football attracts several million players each season. In 2015, a reported 57 million fanatics rostered at least one team, according to the Fantasy Trade Association.

Last year, ESPN set a sports category record, with avid Fantasy users helping to boost its unique users to more than 94.4 million, CNBC reported.
