6 Dead, 27 Wounded in Chicago Weekend Shootings

At least six people were killed and 27 others wounded in weekend gun violence across Chicago.

A 7-year-old boy was shot Sunday night while walking his bicycle up the steps of his family's home around 9 p.m., police said. The shooting happened outside Charles Sumner Math & Science Academy, where school starts in a week.

Residents who live in the area said the neighborhood is normally considered a safe haven for kids.

"This is the safest part of the neighborhood for them to play," resident Lavell Tubbs said, "so all the kids come out and play right here by the school, so I really didn't expect anything like this to happen."

The latest homicide took place just before 10 p.m. Sunday near West 93rd and South Elizabeth streets when a 27-year-old man was fatally shot in the head. Another homicide was reported around 4:35 a.m. Sunday near Springfield and Wilcox avenues when a shooting injured three women and killed one man, police said.

The man was struck in the chest and pronounced dead at Mount Sinai hospital, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

A 23-year-old woman with wounds to both feet was listed in stable condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, and a 21-year-old women shot in the chest and back was listed in grave condition. A 20-year-old woman also suffered a graze wound to the right leg but refused treatment, Mirabelli said.

A 19-year-old man was killed Saturday in a fatal shooting just before midnight in the 800 block of South Lawndale Avenue, police said.

The teen, who has known gang affiliations, was shot in the head while riding his bike. A witness saw him riding his bicycle in the area, heard shots and found him. The witness also saw two men fleeing the scene on bicycles, heading westbound, Mirabelli said.

The man was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital just after 3 a.m., according to police.

Another man was killed 20 minutes earlier in the 0-100 block of South Parkside Avenue, just one block from the Austin District police station.

Two 20-year-old men were shot in the incident. One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene and another was in stable condition at the scene, police said.

Around 11:30 p.m. Friday in the 1800 block of North Pulaski Road when two people were shot, one of them fatally, and another was pistol-whipped by a co-worker after arguing at a party about beer.

Police said a man in his 40s was shot in the abdomen and later pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital while a second man was last listed in critical condition at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds.

A third victim was pistol-whipped at treated at the scene, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Michael Sullivan.

Police said the co-workers were at a party when an argument ensued over beer. The offender left the party but returned with a handgun and fired multiple shots.

Police said a suspect is in custody but charges had not been filed as of Saturday morning.

Around 9:50 p.m. a 75-year-old man was found dead in the 5600 block of South Racine Avenue with trauma to the head. It was originally unclear how he died, whether by gunshot or being hit by an object, but police later confirmed he died of blunt force trauma.

Earlier Friday afternoon, a 3-year-old girl reportedly alerted neighbors to the fatal shooting of her 24-year-old stepfather at a family home in the Morgan Park neighborhood Friday.

Police responded to a report of shots fired around 3:10 p.m. in the 1100 block of West 111th Place, according to Police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada.

A 24-year-old man was found dead inside the residence with a gunshot wound to the head, Estrada said.

A toddler, who was thought to have been home at the time of the shooting, ran next door to tell neighbors, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Police believe the shooting may have been narcotics related but no one was in custody as of Saturday morning.

Area South detectives are investigating.

At least 20 other people were also wounded in shootings across the city since Friday.

Two men were injured just after 2 a.m. Sunday in separate shootings.

A 36-year-old man was shot in the chest, arm and stomach in the 200 block of West 94th Street.

Another man in his 40s was shot in the 1100 block of North Kildare Avenue. He was last listed in stable condition at Stroger Hospital with wounds to the wrist and buttocks, police said.

Around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, three men were injured in a shooting in the 1200 block of South Lawndale Avenue in a shooting that stemmed from an earlier beating.

The three men injured are believed to have been involved in the battering of an individual in an alley, Mirabelli said, and the shooting is thought to have been a retaliation for the beating.

A group of offenders approached the three men and one gunman fired several shots, police said.

A 39-year-old man, a 49-year-old man and a 24-year-old man were all injured in the shooting.

No one was in custody as of Sunday morning.

On Saturday, two men were shot while riding their bikes around 11:15 p.m. in the 500 block of West 115th Street, police said.

An 18-year-old man and a 30-year-old man said they heard shots and felt pain.

Their conditions were not known as of Sunday morning.

Just over an hour earlier, a 22-year-old man was shot in the 6000 block of North Sacramento Avenue. The man was allegedly in the process of a narcotics transaction, according to Officer Mirabelli.

The man was shot in the chest and listed in stable condition at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. Police recovered narcotics at the scene, Mirabelli said.

Saturday afternoon, a teen was wounded around 1 p.m. near the intersection of North and Leamington Avenues in the North Austin neighborhood, police said.

A 19-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to his chest, arm, and foot. He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in serious condition, according to authorities.

About an hour earlier, a 22-year-old man was shot in the 9100 block of South Throop Street.

The man was shot multiple times and transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition, police said.

Details surrounding the shooting were not immediately available.

Around 5 a.m. Saturday a man was shot in the 4000 block of West Grenshaw Street on the city’s West Side.

The man, of an unknown age, was last listed in stable condition at Mount Sinai Hospital with wounds to the hand and foot, police said.

Just over an hour earlier, a 24-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 1700 block of West 19th Street. He was taken in stable condition to John H. Stroger Hospital.

Around 1 a.m., a 27-year-old man was shot in the arm in the 5000 block of West Superior Street. He was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

On Friday, two people were injured in a shooting in the 4800 block of West Walton Street.

Around 11:05 p.m. a 16-year-old girl was shot in the leg and transported to West Suburban Medical Center and a 21-year-old man, also shot in the leg, drove himself to the same hospital, police said.

Less than an hour earlier, two teens were shot in the 2600 block of South Ridgeway Avenue. A 17-year-old man allegedly shot an 18-year-old man in the head around 10:10 p.m., police said.

A witness who saw the shooting then shot the teen in the face.
Both teens were last listed in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Earlier, a 23-year-old man walked into Holy Cross Hospital with a gunshot wound to the wrist. The man was shot around 3:15 p.m. in the 7100 block of South Kedzie Avenue, police said.

Minutes earlier, a 30-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 5900 block of South Spaulding Avenue. He was last listed in stable condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center.

The weekend’s first shooting took place around 1:08 p.m. in the 9000 block of South Marshfield Avenue when a 34-year-old man was shot in the buttocks. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition and a female who suffered a graze wound in the incident refused treatment.
