Central Florida Toddler Killed After Wandering From Home, Onto Busy Highway

A toddler got out of his house and wandered onto a busy highway where he was struck and killed by a passing SUV, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Bystanders tried to revive Christopher Johnson on Thursday, but he died a short time later at Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford.

Sgt. Kim Montes says the child would have been 2 in April.

Montes says SUV driver James Stephens "saw a glimpse'' of the child but couldn't stop in time to avoid hitting him. She says Stephens was distraught after the crash.

Montes says the boy's mother was home at the time. Investigators are trying to find out what happened before the child got out of the house. She added that investigators believe he was just a "very active'' boy.
