The man accused of opening fire at a Maryland newspaper, killing five employees, has been indicted on 23 counts related to the shooting, including five counts of first-degree murder.

A grand jury indicted Jarrod Ramos, 38, of Laurel, in the June 28 shooting at the newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, Anne Arundel County State's Attorney Wes Adams said Friday in a release

Ramos is charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Wendi Winters, Robert Hiaasen, Gerald Fischman, John McNamara and Rebecca Ann Smith.

He is also charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder and multiple counts of both first-degree assault and the use of a firearm in commission of a crime of violence.

Ramos had a well-documented history of harassing the paper's journalists. He unsuccessfully sued the paper for defamation, and he often railed against current and former Capital staff in profanity-laced tweets.

Police said he sent three letters on the day of the attack, including one that said he was on his way to the Capital Gazette newsroom with the aim "of killing every person present."
