Brooklyn Woman Found Guilty of Abusing 100 Rabbits

The 36-year-old music teacher from Poland has been keeping rabbits in the lot since 2012. She says she raised them "to be wild and strong"

A 36-year-old woman accused of abusing rabbits seized from a rabbit colony in Brooklyn has been convicted on 100 counts of animal cruelty.

The New York Times reports Dorota Trec, of Brooklyn, faces up to two years in jail and fines after Monday's conviction.

Authorities say the rabbits were seized from her last year. They say they had various injuries and ailments including syphilis.

Trec contends the rabbits were injured while they were being confiscated from a vacant lot near the Gowanus Canal.

The 36-year-old music teacher from Poland has been keeping rabbits in the lot since 2012. She says she raised them "to be wild and strong."

Animal control authorities took a total 176 rabbits from the lot after a news article drew attention to the colony.
