Ground has been broken on a public housing project in Southeast Texas nearly six years after Hurricane Ike left hundreds of units unlivable.
Leaders of the Galveston Housing Authority and St. Louis-based developer McCormack Baron Salazar ceremonially broke ground Wednesday on two mixed-income projects.
The Galveston County Daily News reports part of the plan includes 145 public- or subsidized-housing units. Those apartments will be built next to 137 market-rate, privately leased units.
The sites are where 569 public housing units were ruined and demolished after Ike stormed ashore on Sept, 13. 2008. The hurricane caused about $29 billion in damage and left more than three dozen people dead.
Lawsuits over whether new public housing should be built in Galveston or if rental vouchers should be offered delayed the projects.
