New Playground Shade Structures Help Keep Kids Active, Cool and Safe During Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) collaborated with a non-profit, KaBOOM and hundreds of volunteers, to build a shade structure over a playground that it sponsored and built in south Dallas last year. BCBSTX built the playgrounds in underprivileged communities across the state.

Because most families in these neighborhoods have lower-than-average incomes, many parents lack the resources to provide their children with a safe place to be physically active. The organization that provided the location for the Dallas playground was Cornerstone CDC. "Given the intensely hot summer we experienced last year, we can really appreciate the value of adding shade structures from both a comfort and health standpoint,” said Chris L. Simmons, executive director for Cornerstone Community Development Corporation in Dallas.

“We applaud our partners, Blue Cross and Blue Shield and KaBOOM!, for returning to provide shade structures for the hundreds of neighborhood children who can now play safely in our playground, even if we have a repeat of last year’s weather conditions.”

While shade generally blocks harmful UV rays, the American Cancer Society still encourages people to wear tightly woven clothes, sunglasses, wide-brim hats and SPF 15 sunscreen (or higher) for when they are not covered by the shade. The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates that 4,020 Texans will be diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer this year. To help protect vulnerable children, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) is building shade structures over some of the playgrounds it helped build in Dallas, Houston, Austin and Abilene last year.

For the first time in the history of North Texas and only the third time in the US, an 11 year old club volleyball team has qualified in the 12s division for the USAV Junior National Championships, which used to be referred to as the Junior Olympics. The Plano-based Madfrog Volleyball Club is celebrating not only their 11s National team led by Coach Kelly Brown, they are also celebrating the fact that a total of ten of their Madfrog teams qualified for this prestigious tournament and will be heading to Columbus, Ohio at the end of June in hopes of bringing home a gold medal!

Grand Prairie based Triumph Interiors employees donated their time to help fill raised garden beds for senior citizens and disabled gardeners at the Luckett Community Garden in Grand Prairie. The company rented a van for the employees to come as a group. They are working at the garden for two days. We really appreciate their service to the community and hope you can post this photo.

I am writing to tell you about my son Aidan and the Tanglewood Elementary Honor Choir. The choir was recently selected to sing the National Anthem at the Texas Rangers game on Saturday, May 12.
18/42
The group is comprised of fifty 4th and 5th grade students who tried out and were selected for the choir based on their singing ability, character and grades. The choir is directed by Robyn Dellamura, choir and 3rd grade teacher.

The group performed like pros – they hit every high note and remembered every word! Not to mention that all of this happened in front of a sold-out crowd of over 47,000. We are so proud of this group!
