Woman's Book Drive Is Success Even In Hard Times
Farmers Branch resident Karen Furlong was worried the declining economy in Dallas-Fort Worth might play Scrooge with her annual fundraising book drive, the Dallas Morning News reports. Instead, she may end up with record donations to her Starr Readers project, allowing her to deliver $5,000 worth of books just in time for the Feast of the Magi on Jan. 6, a traditional day for gift-giving in Mexico. Passenger Prevents Serious Accident
A minor one-car accident could have been something much worse had it not been for a quick-thinking passenger, the McKinney Courier-Gazette reports. McKinney police responded to a one-car accident on Sunday afternoon near the intersection of Eldorado Parkway and Hardin Boulevard when the driver suffered a seizure behind the wheel of his car.  McKinney police Lt. Scott Brewer said the unidentified driver was heading west on Eldorado Parkway when he suffered a seizure and lost control of his vehicle.

Newspaper's Charity for Kids Reaches Goal
The directors of the Goodfellow Fund got a wonderful Christmas surprise, the Star-Telegram reports. At midweek, the Star-Telegram’s annual charity for children was about $17,000 behind its fundraising goal.  But Wednesday’s mail brought so many contributions that staffers came in Christmas afternoon to sort through them. Wedding Cake Business Is A Dream Come True For Two Duncanville Bakers
By day, math teacher Chad Fitzgerald helps his students work through algebra problems. After hours, he guides brides-to-be through the intricate process of choosing a wedding cake, the Dallas Morning News reports. He and his partner, Edward Navejas, 30, an accounts manager for a Carrollton company, make only wedding cakes in their shop. 7-Eleven Stores In Dallas Area Giving Away Free Coffee On New Year’s Eve As Usual
7-Eleven stores are giving out free coffee between midnight, Dec. 31 and 6 a.m. Jan. 1, 2009, Pegasus News reports.  The overnight offer includes all fresh-brewed coffees, as well as gourmet specialties such as cappuccino and hot chocolate.
