Watch: Driver of Stolen Ambulance Runs From Police

Police dash camera video shows bizarre pursuit in Fort Worth

Police dash camera video obtained by NBC 5 shows the driver of a stolen ambulance leading police from Dallas and Fort Worth on a chase, yet stopping at multiple red lights along the way.

The incident happened on Sept. 30 and involved a CareFlite ambulance reported stolen from Methodist Charlton Medical Center, in the 3500 block of Wheatland Road in Dallas.

The driver, a hospital patient, led police north on State Highway 67, onto Interstate 35E, past downtown Dallas, onto State Highway 183 Westbound, through Irving, past Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, through the Mid-Cities and south onto Northeast Loop 820 into Fort Worth before exiting onto Lancaster Avenue and turning north onto Dottie Flynn Parkway, which becomes Eastchase Parkway as it approaches Interstate 30.

Fort Worth Police Department video of the chase shows the driver stopping at multiple stop lights along Eastchase Parkway, two of which were red for approximately 90 seconds, all the while refusing multiple verbal commands by officers to exit the vehicle.

After being stopped for roughly a minute-and-a-half, one Fort Worth officer is heard over the police radio saying, "I guess he was waiting for a green light," as the chase continued on.

Twice, the video shows police officers attempting to exit their own vehicles in an attempt to approach the ambulance. In each instance the light turned green and the ambulance drove on before the officers were able to fully exit their squad cars.

NBC 5 Law Enforcement Expert Don Peritz, a retired Dallas County sheriff's deputy, viewed the dash camera video and sympathized with the predicament the pursuing officers were in.

"Well, what I'm seeing is a man that is absolutely unpredictable," Peritz said about the suspect at the wheel of the ambulance. "You don't know if he's armed. You don know what his thoughts are. And, now, all of a sudden he wants to obey the law in a stolen ambulance. It's one of those really dangerous situations you don't want to be in, but you know you have to take care of business."

Both the Dallas and Fort Worth police departments have rules that prevent their officers from pulling their vehicles in front of a fleeing vehicle in an attempt to block it from continuing on, according to statements each department gave Thursday.

Officers deployed spikes to blow out the tires of the ambulance as it approached the eastbound I-30 on ramp and, again, the ambulance sat through a 90-second red light while the pursuing officers sat behind, sirens wailing, giving verbal commands for the driver to exit the truck.

A short distance later, after a police officer is seen exiting his squad car, pistol drawn, at yet another red light, the ambulance ground to a stop in the driveway leading to a Jack in the Box on the north side of I-30.

Officers took the driver into custody, before he was reportedly taken for a psychological evaluation.
