Virgin America Christens Plane DFW One

Air carrier honors North Texas airport

Ah, this is nice.

Sir Richard Branson and, presumably, the other headcheeses with Virgin America airlines like their route into Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport so much they named one of their planes DFW One.

It’s an Airbus A-320 — which looks like this if you’re flying it or like this if you’re standing off to the side — and it made its maiden voyage to its namesake port-of-call, oh, about an hour or so ago.

The bigwigs at the airport arranged a little “shower of affection” water cannon salute to welcome the plane, crew, and passengers to North Texas. Thank god they didn’t arrange for Big Tex to straddle the plane and let loose with an amplified “yee haww.”

Anyway, it’s the first time Virgin America honored a destination airport by naming a plane after it, according to a press release issued by D/FW, so, hurray for us.

It’s probably not the last, though, once Branson figures out how to incorporate a space shuttle into the Virgin airlines fleet for junkets to an orbiting space station.

That one might be cooler, but ours will still be the first, which, somehow, seems appropriate for Virgin.
