Vandalism Sparks Confederate Statue Debate

The debate about whether to remove the Confederate Soldiers Monument in Denton Square grows after the monument was vandalized.

Surveillance video captured vandals spray-painting "This is racist" on the statue outside the Denton County Courthouse Sunday night.

Several people stood outside the monument Monday night: Some in support of removing the statue and others to protect it.

One man brought a loaded semi-automatic rifle and stood by the statue, confronting protesters. He left after police confiscated his ammunition. He later posted on Facebook, "Of course no shots were fired. Why would I shoot. I was there to make a point."

The Denton City Council is set to meet Tuesday night. The statue is not listed on the agenda, but it could be discussed in the public forum discussion.
