Van de Putte Announces San Antonio Mayoral Run

State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte says she is a candidate for mayor of San Antonio.

Van de Putte announced her plans in interviews Wednesday with the San Antonio Express-News and KSAT-TV of San Antonio.

The mayoral election is May 9.

Only two weeks ago, the San Antonio Democrat lost her race for lieutenant governor. Republican state Sen. Dan Patrick of Houston was elected with 58 percent of the vote to Van de Putte's 40 percent.

The 59-year-old San Antonio pharmacist represented a district on San Antonio's West Side from 1990 until 1999, when she was elected to the state Senate seat she still holds.

Her announcement comes months after Democrat Mike Villarreal resigned from his Texas House seat to become the first formal candidate for the office.
