University of Texas Board Reverses 1 Austin Campus Gun Rule

The University of Texas System Board of Regents has struck down a rule that would have barred chambered rounds in concealed semi-automatic handguns on the flagship UT-Austin campus.

But the board has rejected efforts to overturn other rules adopted by the university to limit the guns on campus in the wake of a new state law that allows handgun license holders to pack their guns inside campus buildings.

Regents meeting Wednesday made no moves to change gun rules at the system's 13 other state campuses.

The UT-Austin campus already is the only public Texas university to allow the sole occupant of an office to declare that office off-limits to guns.

Some professors want concealed weapons banned from classrooms, but school president Gregory Fenves says that would be illegal.
