Fort Worth firefighters said they pulled the victim from the home in the 2800 block of College Avenue at 3:45 a.m., about 15 minutes after the fire started.

The victim was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas where he was treated for smoke inhalation, Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Lt. Kyle Falkner said.

"Anytime we are dealing with a situation like this, hazardous environment, someone who has been overcome by smoke, it is always difficult," Falkner said. "It takes a team effort to get those guys out."

The victim's condition is not known, but paramedics said he woke up when they gave him oxygen in the ambulance.

Brian Ortiz, who lives in the other half of the duplex, said he awoke to the smell of smoke just after the fire started and was able to escape without injury.

"[I'm] just thankful to God I am still alive," he said. "It could have been worse."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
