TxDOT to Shame Toll Scofflaws

The Texas Department of Transportation is giving toll jumpers until noon Wednesday to pay up, or their names go on the Internet.

TxDOT said the public shaming is necessary in order to recover $27 million in unpaid tolls.

Officials said they've sent notices to 28,000 vehicle owners who have more than 100 unpaid tolls. Those who don't pay up will find their names published on the TxDOT.gov.

Some of the offenders have thousands of unpaid tolls.

In addition to publishing the names of the scofflaws, the department may also ban the vehicles from all toll roads and impound the vehicle if police stop it.

TxDOT can also notify county tax assessors to block vehicle owners from renewing their registrations.

The TxDOT plan to publicly shame toll violators isn't new to North Texans -- the North Texas Tollway Authority has been using the practice to get local violators to pay up as recently as July.
