The state has approved a $90 million improvement project for a short stretch of Farm-to-Market 2499 near Grapevine Mills.
The stretch between state Highway 121 and Denton Creek has long been a problem for commuters coming to and from Denton County.
"It's one of the most items that residents complain to me about," Flower Mound Mayor Pro Tem Mark Wise said.
Improvements will include a bridge system at Stars and Stripes Way and Grapevine Mills Boulevard.
Denton County Commissioner Andy Eads said it will be the most noticeable change that he hopes will ease congestion on the road.
"Especially in the morning rush hour traffic, this will reduce the travel time at least by 30 minutes for the average commuter," he said.
Wise says the mass of drivers commuting for work or traveling to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport often leads to bottlenecks at stop lights.

"This connector will not only increase the mobility for Flower Mound residents and businesses, but also our many visitors who travel through our community every day," Flower Mound Mayor Tom Hayden.
The project is expected to take about 24 months to complete.
Work is expected to start this summer. Traffic may be even worse during the construction, but the payoff will be worth it for drivers who regularly drive in the area, Eads said.
"We know there will be traffic delays but, hopefully, it'll just be for a short period of time and people give us their traveling mercies," he said.
The Texas Department of Transportation also has approved $80 million in improvements to state Highway 121 from the Sam Rayburn Tollway to state Highway 114.
