Longtime Farmersville Couple Killed in House Fire

Cause of fatal fire not yet known

Two longtime residents of Farmersville were killed early Tuesday when their home near Lake Lavon caught fire and burned to the ground, officials say.

Officials with the Farmersville Police Department said 86-year-old Delvin Harrison Sergent and his wife, 88-year-old Betty Lou Sergent, were inside their home on the 500 block of Maple Street when it caught fire at about 4 a.m.

When police and firefighters arrived, the home was "fully involved and resistant to immediate entry." A Farmersville police officer and a deputy with the Collin County Sheriff's Office tried to go into the home as firefighters tried to suppress the flames, but they were forced back by heat, smoke and fire.
