The Dallas Police Department investigation of two incidents involving police officers and their guns continues.
Attempted Carjacking of Off-Duty Officer
Dallas police said they are searching for an attempted carjacker who made off with a police officer's handgun.
At around 1 a.m. Wednesday police said a man approached the vehicle of off-duty Dallas police Sgt. Stormy Magiera who was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Forest Lane and Audelia Road. The suspect reportedly pulled a knife and demanded money and Magiera's car.
Magiera, 36, fought with the suspect from her driver's seat and police said she managed to fire her weapon.
Police said the man ran away with the Magiera's service weapon and $16. It is not yet known if the suspect was hit by the bullet.
Magiera suffered minor injuries in the struggle and was treated at the scene for minor injuries, police said.
Magiera received the medal of valor a couple of weeks ago from Dallas Police Chief David Brown.
So far no description of the suspect has been released.
Officer Shoots, Kills Suspect
A Dallas police officer shot and killed a suspect late Tuesday night after the passenger of a car reached for a gun, police officials said.
The incident happened just after 10 p.m., at Penelope and Cross Streets on the city's south side.
The officer was responding to a resident's complaint of a suspicious vehicle parked at the corner.
Police said as Officer Gregory Ceraso approached the car with two people inside, he saw a handgun inside the vehicle.
The passenger, Cedric Stephens, 29, reached for the gun, that's police said, is when Ceraso, fearing for his safety, fired his weapon striking Stephens.
Stephens died, the other person in the car was not hurt but was arrested, police said.
Ceraso is on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting. Ceraso has been with the Dallas Police Department for three years and is assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division.
