Texas Teen Dies in Crash in Portales After Police Chase

A 16-year-old Lubbock girl has died from injuries sustained when a vehicle crash in Portales, New Mexico, after a police chase.

The Portales News-Tribune reports that Portales police say officers were dispatched early Tuesday after reports of a suspicious vehicle in an alleyway. When officers arrived, the vehicle fled, leading to a brief pursuit that ended in a one-vehicle crash.

Portales Police Department Public Information Officer Charlie Smart says three people were in the vehicle: a male driver believed to be 18 years old, a 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, all of Lubbock. The driver and the girl were airlifted to a Lubbock hospital in critical condition where the girl later died.

Police say the vehicle was reported as stolen out of Lubbock and the two juveniles were listed as runaways.
