Texas Teen Dies After Being Put in Chokehold While Wrestling

A 17-year-old has died after being placed in a chokehold while wrestling with another teen at a sleepover, according to police in Central Texas.

San Marcos police said Elijah Hernandez died early Sunday morning. Hernandez and six other friends were at a home for a sleepover when he and another 17-year-old started wrestling, according to police.

Police said the second teen put Hernandez in a chokehold neck restraint and told him to indicate when he was giving up. When Hernandez passed out, the other teen released his hold.

Police said the father at the house started performing CPR on Hernandez and someone called 911.

Hernandez was pronounced dead at the hospital. His cause of death is pending an autopsy.

Police spokeswoman Kristi Wyatt said police have determined the death was accidental and don't plan charges.
