Texas Taxpayers Could Help Build Spaceport

Texas spaceport backers look to state for help

Backers of a proposal to build a commercial spaceport in the southernmost tip of Texas are looking for ways to attract the company with full knowledge that money will be tight in the upcoming legislative session.

The beachside location near the U.S.-Mexico border is in the running with Florida, Georgia and Puerto Rico for California-based SpaceX's new launch site.

The most immediate hurdle is an environmental assessment for the Federal Aviation Administration, but state lawmakers and local officials are trying to put together the most attractive package in the meantime.

Some concede Texas may not be able to match the dollars Florida's dedicated space agency could put up, but hope that a site all its own could draw SpaceX.
