State, Travis County at Odds Over Online Voter Registration

State officials say more than 2,000 voter-registration applications submitted through an online service are invalid, but Travis County officials say they will accept the applications they've received.

The Austin American-Statesman reports that Texas doesn't allow online registration, but a California-based nonprofit that operates Vote.org appears to have found a loophole by allowing voters to complete an online application and then attach a photo of their signature.

State elections officials say the applications are incomplete because they don't contain original signatures.

But Travis County officials say a legal review has found that copies of registration forms and signatures are acceptable under state law.

The county has received about 800 applications through Vote.org. Bexar, Dallas and Cameron counties also have received applications through the site.
