Texas Gov. Abbott Going to Israel, Switzerland for Next Trip

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is heading overseas for an expected visit with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and to attend the World Economic Forum in Switzerland.

The trips announced Tuesday follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who also visited Jerusalem and the Swiss Alps during his final years in office.

Abbott says the trip is a chance to build ties with new international business partners. His office says he is scheduled to visit a defense contractor and a desalination plant in Israel before heading to Davos, where the World Economic Forum draws a combination of corporate executives, world leaders and celebrities.

Abbott's weeklong trip begins Monday. He has also gone to Mexico and Cuba since taking office last year.
