Texas' First Locally-Acquired Chikungunya Case Identified

Health officials say a South Texas resident developed the state's first locally-acquired case of the mosquito-borne illness chikungunya last year.

The Texas Department of State Health Services said Tuesday that the Cameron County resident who hadn't traveled got sick in November and was diagnosed by lab test in January. But the case wasn't reported to the local health department till last month.

State health officials say the case was confirmed last week by testing at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

All previous Texans who contracted the illness were infected abroad. Health officials say since mosquito surveillance hasn't found the disease in local mosquitoes, the primary risk of infection in Texas remains related to travel.

Previously in the U.S., local transmission was identified in Florida in 2014.
