Texas Firefighter Dies in Apparent Murder-Suicide

A Midland firefighter has died from gunshot wounds in what police say was an apparent murder-suicide involving a five-hour armed standoff.

Midland city spokeswoman Sara Higgins says police and firefighters found 35-year-old firefighter Henry "Trey" Rodriguez III with life-threatening wounds at a Midland house about 2:30 p.m. Friday. He was transported to Midland Memorial Hospital where he died.

The man police suspected killed Rodriguez barricaded himself at the crime scene for five hours. Police tried to defuse the situation with non-lethal gas and a robot. Nevertheless, police found 35-year-old suspect Nestor Castro Jr. dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound about 7:30 p.m. inside the house.

A police spokeswoman says a woman was also at the home but wasn't injured.
