Texas DPS to Motorists: Behave

The Texas Department of Public Safety's on-the-road advice for the Memorial Day weekend is simple.

Do wear a seat belt.

Don't speed, or drink and drive.

DPS on Thursday reminded motorists that all available troopers will be on patrol during the long Memorial Day weekend, through Monday.

Texas troopers during the 2008 Memorial Day weekend arrested 553 drunken drivers and wrote nearly 6,500 speeding tickets.

The agency said about 1,930 seat belt and 353 child restraint citations were also issued.

In addition, many North Texas cities have declared the holiday weekend a "no-refusal" weekend for blood and breath tests.

Judges will be on-call to get search warrants for blood samples from anyone who refuses a breathalyzer test.
