Texas DPS Mega Center Opens in Garland Wednesday

Fort Worth Mega Center to open in January, 2013

The first Texas Department of Public Safety Mega Center will open this week in North Texas, designed to shortening wait times and lessening strain on drivers.

The Mega Center at 4445-A Saturn Road in Garland is scheduled to open Wednesday.

The Texas DPS opened facilities last week in the Houston-area cities of Spring and Rosenberg.

The Mega Centers are 24,000 square feet and equipped to handle about 900 customers each day. Self-service kiosks let customers enter their cellphone numbers and get a text message with their expected wait times.

The Texas Legislature last year budgeted $63 million for six Mega Centers.

A Mega Center will open at 8301 Brentwood Stair Road in Fort Worth, as well as other locations in Houston and Leon Valley, by the end of January.
