The top archery bowman in Texas is a 17-year-old from Flower Mound who has overcome big obstacles to hit his target.
Sam White is passionate about archery.
"It's very relaxing," he said. "It definitely helps when you're in AP classes and you're stressed out."
He is the number-one archer in Texas. And archery has taken him places he never imagined.
"My team and I won state, won nationals and came in second at world," he added.
The senior at Marcus High School is the only Texan selected to represent the United States at an international tournament in South Africa. But getting here wasn't a straight shot.
"When I started, it was really rough," he joked. "I was known as the worst archer in my school."

"We went to the first tournament and he was so bad it was funny," said his father, Chris White. "The coach ended up kicking him off the team."
It wasn't the first challenge he had to overcome.
His family is from New Orleans, and Hurricane Katrina brought them to North Texas.
They ended up in Flower Mound, where Sam White learned about archery in middle school as he was still trying to fit in with his new classmates.
"I wanted to be the cool kid," he recalled.
Now, he's the one everyone's talking about.
He's proving life can be full of detours. But if you never lose sight of the target, you never know what can happen.
