Texas alcohol regulators have begun a back-to-school operation meant to halt illegal sales to underage individuals.
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission on Thursday announced the September undercover effort. The Texas legal drinking age for alcohol is 21.
Undercover TABC agents will escort underage individuals trying to buy booze. A TABC statement says the stings will target retailers in cities with major colleges and universities.
Agents in March visited 1,488 state-licensed businesses during a similar spring break operation. More than 92 percent of businesses were found to be in compliance with Texas law.
Businesses selling alcohol to minors could lose their liquor licenses. Individuals selling alcohol to underage people could face a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.
