Texas Agency Offers Private Wind Coverage Details

The Texas Department of Insurance says home insurance in the Coastal Bend would be about 70 percent cheaper without private wind coverage.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported Thursday that a department spokesman says residents with a $2,000 home insurance policy could pay $600 if windstorm coverage was excluded from their premium.

The figure doesn't apply to about 60 percent of residents covered through the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association. The association provides windstorm and hail coverage for those who can't get it from the voluntary market.

State Rep. Todd Hunter of Corpus Christi asked for the information. Hunter says he wanted to know windstorm insurance rates so residents could have a baseline if rates increased.

Hunter has backed legislation to add more transparency regulations to the Texas Department of Insurance.
