Texans Celebrate Chicken Fried Steak Day on Oct. 26

Texas holiday centers on comfort food for the body and soul

One of Texas' favorite dishes gets a day all to itself each fall. Chicken Fried Steak Day, by proclamation by the state legislature, is celebrated every Oct. 26. [[290815791, R]]

In 2011 the 82nd Texas Legislature approved House Resolution 1419, praising chicken fried steak as a food that reflects the history and diversity of Texas.

"That exceptional dish [...] elevates the hearty flavor of beef to new heights by coating it in batter and breading and frying it until the ingredients are melded in a blissful union," the resolution states.

"I've been waiting all day," said one diner at All Good Cafe in Deep Ellum, which has been recognized repeatedly as a favorite for its chicken fried steak.

"The chicken fried steak is definitely the most popular item on the menu here," said Dante Martinez. "It's like that indulgent bite, you know, it scratches that itch. It satiates that, like, 'Can I have a little fun with my dinner? Can we be a little wild with it, you know?'"

Six years ago, restaurateur Jeffrey Yarbrough and singer Jimmy Baldwin had the idea to give chicken fried steak a little — official — respect.

"And so we came up with the idea to have Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day," Baldwin and Yarbrough said in unison. "Everyone's just arguing. If everyone could sit down to a meal of chicken fried steak, which is great, and start talking; once you start talking, things get better."

Baldwin even wrote a song, a little deep-fried wisdom. It's called "Peace, Love, and Chicken Fried Steak."

On Thursday, Texas officially proclaimed the song the official anthem of Chicken Fried Steak Day.

"If we all had chicken fried steak, maybe we'd have more peace and love," Baldwin said.
