Teens Crash Into Tree; Underage Driver May Be Charged

An overnight crash in East Dallas sent two teenagers and two younger passengers to the hospital.

It happened after 1 a.m, when the 15-year-old driver from Mesquite lost control and crashed head-on into a tree on westbound Piedmont Drive at Ava Lane.

The driver's 10-year-old brother was beside him in the front seat and was seriously injured.

Both had to be extracted from the wreckage.

Miguel Cardenas, 17, of Dallas, was in the back seat, with a 12-year-girl also from Dallas.

Neither one was wearing a seat belt. Several residents near the crash ran to the scene to comfort the four victims until help arrived.

The four are now being treated at Parkland and Baylor hospitals.

Dallas police said the underaged driver may be charged with intoxication assault pending the results of blood samples taken at the scene. He's being treated at Parkland Hospital for trauma to the chest and a broken right ankle.

The 17-year-old suffered facial fractures when he collided with the 12-year-old girl also in the backseat.

She suffered a skull fracture after colliding with Cardenas. Both are being treated at Baylor.
