Victim, DA Decide Punishment for Teen in Target Beating

Teen pleads guilty, victim helps district attorney settle on punishment

A 17-year-old charged with aggravated assault that caused serious bodily injury has plead guilty, Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson says.

Authorities said Zantrell Sauls was involved in an attack in January at a Dallas Target store that left a man with a fractured skull.

Officials said the victim of the attack worked with authorities to determine a punishment.

"With the victim's approval, Sauls was sentenced to 10 years deferred adjudication with four months of jail time as a condition. The victim is focused on his recovery and putting this vicious crime behind him," a press release said. "We want young adults who may be considering criminal behavior to know that probation does not mean you are beyond the eyes of the law. Because of Zantrell Sauls' actions, for the next 10 years, he will be closely monitored by the court. It is up to him to choose the right path."

Sauls also pleaded guilty to a robbery. This was a seperate incident that happened on the same day as the attack.
